Week 2 ~ Books and Crazy Minds

Image
This week at my internship I learned a lot about different parts of the body. A patient came in with diverticulitis which is when the pouches/holes sometimes found on a persons colon become infected or inflamed due to food particles getting stuck. Crystal informed the patient that it would be best to go get a colonoscopy due to the fact cancer could possibly be formed from the diverticulitis. When we left the patient, Crystal explained to me in detail and with pictures what diverticulitis is and what it looks like.  She then explained to me, with a book, a variety of different body parts and their functions. The book was very detailed and extremely interesting to me. For an example, this book showed every little part of the ear. Before I looked in this book, I had no idea there were so may little parts involved with something as tiny as the ear. This week a lot of people were coming in with symptoms of the flu. The nurses that Crystal work with have been doing flu tests; then

Week 1 ~ Getting Comfortable

Being in a new place is always a nerve-racking thing to get used to. Lucky for me, I already knew my mentor Crystal prior to starting this internship. Crystal has been a Family Medicine Physician Assistant for about 22 years now. As I was meeting everyone else at Wichita Primary Care, I quickly realized each of them are very kind and easy-going. A Physician Assistant is a career that has always sparked interest to me. Hello, my name is Chloe and I am a senior at Andale High School. I am currently taking an internship class through the high school from 8 A.M. to 10 A.M. This spring semester I will be interning at Wichita Primary Care Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. I have a passion for watching and helping others regain health to live a better, fuller life. Being able to play a factor in this is something that brings me joy. I also am someone who likes to work with a team; in the medical field, I will get the opportunity everyday to work alongside co-workers. Through the course of this internship, my biggest goal is to build relationships with the staff and patients. To achieve this I will need to be willing to start conversations, even if it makes me nervous. I am wanting to gain knowledge on medical equipment names and uses, medications commonly prescribed and the reasons, and how to write a proper treatment plan for a patient. By the end of this internship I hope to feel confident in a car
